Would Progesterone Help With Anxiety?

Question: I have been experiencing anxiety type symptoms for the past two or three years and at one point I sought a medical opinion as I had had some slight chest discomfort. Everything checked out with my heart and I was told I needed some medication for the symptoms. I was placed on Paxil and later placed on Lexapro. There was symptom relief but I really want relief from a natural source. I’m interested in doing what I can in terms of behavior but would like a natural product as an adjunct. Do you have any recommendations?
Answer: Anxiety is a difficult situation to deal with – especially via email. There are many elements that can impact how you feel and I am not skilled in the diagnostic arts. Doctors do that. Regardless, I can tell you that anxiety is often made worse when a person is experiencing what is called “estrogen dominance”. This is a term coined by Dr. John R. Lee. It does NOT mean too much estrogen. In fact, a person can have estrogen levels below the average and still be experiencing symptoms associated with estrogen dominance.
Estrogen dominance refers to the relative imbalance between estrogen and other hormones, primarily progesterone. The estrogen activity is not adequately balanced and a person experiences symptoms, one of which is anxiety. There are many chemicals in our environment that have effects on the body that are similar to estrogen. Topical creams that contain progesterone can be applied according to a cycling schedule to help balance estrogen levels and reduce (eliminate?) symptoms associated with estrogen dominance.
We recommend using a small amount of progesterone early in the month, increasing for a couple of weeks, then stopping for 3 to 5 days. The cycling is important because it mimics the natural rise and fall of progesterone levels – and it allows for a time when the cells can be free from the extra hormone. Using progesterone without a break seems to desensitize the cells to the effects of progesterone.
The progesterone we sell, for example, provides 20mg in each pump (about 70 doses per container). It is simple to use. Many women do very well applying 1 pump (20mg) once daily from day 13 to 26 of their cycle (or the 13th through 26th on the calendar if they are not having regular cycles).
If this is not sufficient, or symptoms reoccur throughout the month, the person can apply one pump (20mg) once daily on days 1 through 12; twice daily on days 13 through 26; then stop until day one. These days refer to regular period days. Again, when regular periods have stopped these days refer to calendar.

When Is Day 1 When You Are Postmenopausal?
Posted on 12/21/09 by adminQuestion: I am postmenopausal, and I use bi-est cream and progesterone cream for two weeks. I’d like to know if there is a way to know when my body is in a certain phase, or does it matter? Am I bothering my cycles by arbitrarily starting a “Day 1″ at any time?
Answer:
“Cycles” are defined by the release of an egg, the growth of the lining of the uterus, and the oval of the lining with a “period”. There are no cycles after menopause because no eggs are being released. It makes absolutely no difference what day you set as day ONE. In fact, we usually instruct women just to use the days on the calendar. Day one is the first of the month. The cyclic use of hormones establishes the cycle for you.
In our experience the vast majority of women feel best when they use progesterone – we prefer the topical cream. Our suggested cycling is;
